How We Make Money

RoofHero is a marketplace. Contractors set their own prices. If you hire through RoofHero, contractors pay RoofHero a platform/referral fee. RoofHero does not add a separate fee to your price. We don’t hold your money and we’re not the builder — your contract and payments are with the contractor.

At a glance

  • Marketplace, not the builder: your contract and payments are with the contractor.
  • Who pays RoofHero: the winning contractor pays a platform/referral fee if awarded through RoofHero.
  • What you pay: the contractor’s GST-inclusive price they set themselves. No RoofHero add-on or drip pricing.
  • Final price after inspection: remote scoping starts it; your contractor confirms the final after an on-site check.
  • Fairness safeguard: if the same scope needs to change by more than 5% after inspection, we re-open the tender for re-pricing
  • NSW rules: for residential building work of $20,000 or more, the contractor must provide HBCF (Home Building Compensation Fund) before any deposit; deposits are capped at 10%.

Commission / referral disclosure

Contractors set their own prices. If hired through RoofHero, contractors pay RoofHero a platform/referral fee. RoofHero does not add a separate fee to your price.

We display the total contractor price (including GST). Any platform/referral fee is paid by the contractor to RoofHero and is not added to your price.

What you pay

  • Prices shown on RoofHero are GST-inclusive contractor prices.
  • RoofHero does not charge a separate platform, service or booking fee to homeowners.
  • You pay your contractor directly under your contract with them.

When do we earn a fee?

  • If you award a job through RoofHero, the winning contractor pays RoofHero a platform/referral fee under their Contractor Agreement.
  • If no contractor is hired, no platform/referral fee is payable.

Examples

Example A — Job under $20,000 (NSW)

  • Contractor sets $12,100 inc. GST.
  • You pay the contractor $12,100 (no RoofHero add-on).
  • The contractor pays RoofHero the platform/referral fee.

Example B — Job $20,000 or more (NSW)

  • Contractor sets $27,500 inc. GST.
  • Before any deposit, the contractor issues an HBCF certificate for your job.
  • Deposit capped at 10% (i.e., up to $2,750), paid directly to the contractor after HBCF is issued.
  • The contractor pays RoofHero the platform/referral fee (not added to your price).

Our role

  • RoofHero is not the builder. We don’t supervise works and we don’t hold homeowner funds.
  • Your contract (including workmanship, statutory warranties and insurance) is with the contractor.
  • We require contractors to hold the right licence, $20m public liability insurance and workers compensation, and to use HBCF in NSW where required.
  • We may suspend contractors whose licence or insurance lapses.

State compliance notes

New South Wales (NSW)

  • For residential building work of $20,000 or more, the contractor must provide an HBCF certificate before taking any money (including the deposit).
  • Deposits are capped at 10% for residential building work.
  • RoofHero shows GST-inclusive contractor pricing and no RoofHero homeowner fee.

Victoria (VIC) — coming next

  • We will mirror the NSW approach and align to Domestic Building Insurance (DBI) and VIC deposit rules.
  • Commission disclosure remains the same: contractors pay RoofHero; no separate homeowner fee.

FAQs

Do you mark up contractor prices?

No. Contractors set their own prices. We show you the GST-inclusive price they set. We don’t add a RoofHero fee on top.

Why might a price change after inspection?

Remote scoping handles most roofs, but on-site checks can reveal hidden issues (rot, access, non-standard flashing). If the same scope needs a change greater than 5%, we re-open the tender so you can compare refreshed prices.

Do you handle my payments?

No. Payments are between you and your contractor. RoofHero does not hold homeowner funds.

What if I have a complaint or need help?

Start with your contractor (your contracting party). If unresolved, see our process at /support/complaints-and-disputes.

Legal notes

This page explains how RoofHero earns money and summarises key consumer disclosures. It doesn’t replace your Terms of Service or your contract with your contractor. Where state laws require more protective terms, those apply.
